Ayesha Takia pairs with John Abraham

This comely belle is sure making rapid strides in the film industry.

After winning hearts with her terrific performance in Nagesh Kukunoor’s Dor , Ayesha Takia has now signed another important project with lots of prospect for showing her histrionics.

She has been paired with John Abraham in Anurag Kashyap’s film No Smoking . Kashyap had previously approached Bipasha Basu for the role but she had turned it down due to unspecified reasons.

Kashyap says he had also narrated the script to Ayesha some time back. Moreover, the film’s producers, Vishal Bhardwaj and Kumar Mangat, approved of Ayesha.

Ayesha is presently shooting for a movie in Cape Town. But she has reportedly given her nod to the project. She will play a double role in the movie.

‘No Smoking’ has John playing a chain smoker who joins a rehab to quit the habit. How his life changes after that is what the movie is about.

The film’s shooting has already begun.

John Abraham’s heroine still not finalized

Even though the shooting of Anurag Kashyap’s thriller No Smoking has begun, John Abraham’s heroine in the film is yet to be finalized.

The movie has John Abraham playing a compulsive smoker. Because of his irrepressible desire to smoke, his marriage also comes to the verge of falling apart. The movie aims to give an anti-smoking message in an entertaining way.

Several actresses have been under consideration for the role of female lead in the film. But none has been signed as yet.

The movie’s director, Anurag Kashyap , is said to have been very impressed by Bipasha Basu ’s look in Dhoom 2 . He calls her the “ultimate Indian male fantasy.” There is a possibility that he might suggest her name to the movie’s producers Kumar Mangat and Vishal Bhardwaj.

Meanwhile, the producers have denied that John will give a nude scene in the film. The said scene will show John’s character at the age of 11 and therefore it will be shot on a child artiste.

Sources say ‘No Smoking’ is based on a very unique concept.

But the man has now decided to strike back with his next film titled No Smoking starring John Abraham. The film is story about a chain smoker who wants to quit smoking and therefore joins a rehab. John plays this character of a chain smoker whose marriage comes in trouble because of his smoking addiction. John Abraham`s private moments being watched

Sometimes fans go to great extent to get a personal lowdown of their favourite star.

We have heard of star-struck fans stalking celebrities in Hollywood and even bugging their house in some instances. Now, the trend seems to have made its way to India too.

Recently, a fan has allegedly been sneaking into John Abraham ’s day-to-day life by stealthily peeping (probably by a telescope) into his new apartment in Sea Glimpse at Bandstand, Bandra.

Not only this, the fan even posted the details of his observations on John’s official website, sharing the information with other fans. The information revealed very minute details of John’s life: at what time he woke up, what he had for breakfast and who came to meet him at his apartment.

After these postings continued for three days, the designer of John’s website swung into action and blocked the fan’s ID.

John says he finds it amusing that people would want to know what he does in his house.

He is reportedly planning to grow big plants around the windows so that peeping Toms cannot peek inside.

Nikhil Advani's next?

Film industry and gossip/rumors go hand in hand. In fact, it’s become a habit to hear at least one startling news in the course of the day and later, when you do a bit of cross-checking, you learn that it was a false siren. This time, Nikhil Advani is the topic of discussion!

Reportedly, Nikhil is planning a four-hero project next, once SALAAM-E-ISHQ releases, for which he’s keen to cast Big B, Hrithik Roshan, Akshaye Khanna and John Abraham in principal roles. A news-report even suggests that Nikhil has already paid a handsome signing amount to John.

“Rubbish,” Nikhil laughs aloud, “Where do these rumors originate from? I don’t know what I plan to make next, so how could I be signing the stars for it? I wrapped the shooting of SALAAM-E-ISHQ on Sunday [15th October] and the next three months would be devoted to the post-production work. Where’s the time to think of a new film?”

But there can’t be smoke without fire. The director of KAL HO NAA HO must’ve planned something. “Oh yes, I’ve planned to take a year off once SALAAM-E-ISHQ releases in January 2007. I have decided I won’t work for a year. I owe it to myself and my wife. SALAAM-E-ISHQ has exhausted me completely and I need to recharge my batteries,” he smiles.

All eyes are on SALAAM-E-ISHQ for sure. In fact, it’s amongst the three big films that are slated for release in January 2007. Initially slated for a 26th January release, Nikhil has decided to prepone the release by one day, which means SALAAM-E-ISHQ will hit the marquee on Thursday, 25th January.

While the first teaser of SALAAM-E-ISHQ will be unveiled with JAAN-E-MANN, the promotion of the film will gather momentum from 7th November onwards.

Aishwarya & John have the quality

They've never been paired before. "But if you close your eyes you can see how good John Abraham and Aishwarya Rai look together," says producer Gaurang Doshi who's all set to bring together the golden couple in his new magical mystical romantic musical Happy Birthday.

To be directed by Sriram Raghavan who earlier did Ram Gopal Varma's Saif-Urmila starrer Ek Hasina Thi, Happy Birthday starts shooting in January.

Says Gaurang, "We had signed John about a year back. But we we needed a strong charismatic and popular leading lady. Because Happy Birthday isn't about just the male protagonist. When Ash said yes, everything fell into place. She has never been seen with John before. They look like Adonis and Venus together."

John is on the look-out for new leading ladies to be paired opposite. In Water he's paired with Lisa Ray, in Baabul with Rani Mukherjee and in Salaam-e-Ishq with Vidya Balan for the first time.

Says Gaurang, "The catch-line for Happy Birthday will be, 'Those Who Don't Believe In Magic Will Never Find It.' We needed a magical pair. John and Ash have the quality."

Adds John Abraham, "I think Aishwarya and I will make a good team. It's a great script. Sriram is a super-director, and we're excited."

The music score is being done by Vishal-Shekhar.

Aishwarya, John abraham in Happy Birthday

Here’s a casting coup!

John Abraham and Aishwarya Rai have been teamed for the first time in Gaurang Doshi’s HAPPY BIRTHDAY, to be directed by Sriram Raghavan. Gaurang has a penchant for multi-starrers [AANKHEN and DEEWAAR] and HAPPY BIRTHDAY will have its share of stars too. While Gaurang and Sriram are in the process of finalizing one more leading lady, Paresh Rawal has been roped in for a pivotal role in the film.

There’s a big surprise too, but Gaurang wants it to be just that -- a surprise -- when people watch the film. Okay, let’s give you a clue: The icon will enact one of the key roles in the enterprise.

What’s HAPPY BIRTHDAY all about? “All I can reveal right now is its tagline -- ‘Those who don’t believe in magic, will never find it’,” he smiles. So it’s all about magic? “Not at all! It’s a new genre, completely commercial, a complete dhamaal,” he isn’t in the mood to divulge more.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY begins shooting early next year and the makers are hopeful of releasing it in August 2007. Vishal-Shekhar are scoring its music.

John-Vidya affair? All smoke, no fire!

Recently, the chemistry between actors John Abraham and Vidya Balan became the grist for rumour mills.

Let’s admit it. If two co-stars have some steamy scenes in a film, the gossipmongers have a knack to link them up. It has happened with Akshay Kumar and Priyanka Chopra , Emraan Hashmi and Celina Jaitley and many more stars. John and Vidya happen to be the latest target.

The two are playing lovers in Nikhil Advani’s movie Salaam-e-Ishq . While filming for the movie, John and Vidya shared very good chemistry, which is evident in the promotional stills of the scenes showing them together. Some rumours even said that while shooting for a scene in which John and Vidya hide themselves under a dupatta, the two stayed under the dupatta for good many seconds even after the director had called ‘cut’.

While such canards have only fuelled the rumours further, Vidya has expressed her displeasure at such gossip-talk. John, on the other hand, has made public appearances with his longtime girlfriend Bipasha Basu to drive home the point that he is still with Bips.

Vidya says she just wants to focus on her work as she has some big movies coming up.

Vidya is presently a part of three big movies : Mani Ratnam’s Guru , Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Eklavya and Nikhil Advani’s ‘Salaam-e-Ishq’.

John prepares for musician's role

In case you're wondering why Bollywood's current heartthrob John Abraham has been so low-profile lately, the fact is he has been learning the guitar for his role in Imtiaz Ali's film "Rock Star".

So, when you see him take to the stage as a long-haired rock musician you know John won't be faking it.

"Yes I'm going to get those strings right. No point in strumming senselessly. Nowadays the audience has got very wise. They can tell when an actor is faking it. In fact, I learnt to play the flute for my role in 'Water'," John told IANS.

"At this rate I could become a one-man band. But I didn't have to learn to play ride the bike for 'Dhoom'. Seriously, role ke bahaane it's good fun to expand your horizons. I don't want to be an actor just to look good and wear trendy clothes on screen. I want to go deeper into my characters. It's great fun to prepare for a role."

Deepa Mehta, who directed John in "Water" which is Canada's official entry for Oscars, said he gave his best to her film.

"John shocked me with his preparedness. Whether it was getting into a dhoti or playing the flute or getting the body language of his character right, John put his soul into 'Water'. We've become really close friends. I'm looking forward to working with him again in 'Exclusion'."

John smiled at Mehta's compliments and said: "By the grace of god, I've plenty of prolific work on my plate. I love the family of directors I'm working with - Deepa, Sriram Raghavan ('Happy Birthday'), Nagesh Kukunoor ('Ashayen'), Imtiaz Ali ('Rock Star'), Anurag Kashyap ('No Smoking').

"If you listen to the scripts you would wonder why I'm doing such unusual films when I could be doing hardcore commercial cinema. It's because I want to grow as an actor."

Incidentally, Saif Ali Khan is the other actor in Bollywood who plays the guitar. Maybe the two actors can jam together?

"Why not?" laughed John!

See how John beat Salman!

In case you're wondering why John has been so low-profile lately, it's only work.

Salman, go eat your heart out. While the senior actor has been dying to 'be' a rock star on screen, it's John who has beaten him to it.

John is going to play a musician in Imtiaz Ali's Rock Star. And when we see him take to the stage as a long-haired rock musician John won't be faking it.

He's actually learning to play the guitar for the role.

Says John, "Yes I'm going to get those strings right. No point in strumming senselessly. Nowadays the audience has got very wise. They can tell when an actor is faking it. In fact I learnt to play the flute for my role in Water.

Adds Deepa Mehta, "John shocked me with his preparedness. Whether it was getting into a dhoti or playing the flute or getting the body language of his character right John put his soul into Water. We've become really close friends. I'm looking forward to working with him again in Exclusion."

John smiles at Deepa's compliments. "By the grace of God, I've plenty of prolific work on my plate. I love the family of directors I'm working with: Deepa, Sriram Raghavan (Happy Birthday), Nagesh Kukunoor (Ashayen), Imtiaz Ali (Rock Star), Anurag Kashyap (No Smoking). …

Now, get ready for John Abraham fashion clothes

John Abraham indeed has an impeccable taste in fashion. And this taste will be reflected in the John Abraham Collection, to be launched in November this year.

No, John is not turning into a fashion designer. But he has struck a deal with Wrangler US for a clothes collection that will be titled after his name. More than just the name, the fashion line will use John’s fashion sensibilities for designing the ready-to-wear clothes for both men and women.

The designers of the collection will be from Milan (Italy) and London (UK). They are the same people who design for the Diesel brand.

John says once the fashion line is launched, he would wear only John Abraham Collection clothes. And he urges his male and female fans to do the same.

John has been an ambassador for Wrangler for quite some time now. The brand’s association with the dashing Bollywood star has increased its sales. Therefore, the idea to launch a clothes line exclusively in the name of John Abraham came about.

The actor says the collection would have everything that he sartorially aspires to wear.

John was named the Asia’s sexiest man last year by a UK-based Bollywood magazine. This year, he has been named the second best after Abhishek Bachchan . However, John’s popularity with today’s youths, girls particularly, has not waned a bit.

Considering this, the John Abraham Collection ought to be a hit among youngsters.

John takes up cudgels on behalf of girl child

First Deepa Mehta's Water, now Ravi Chopra's Babul…. In both John Abraham plays a progressive man who wants to marry a widow. And there’s another film on widow rehabilitation Dor which people are talking about.

"Deepa's Water is going to be distributed by Ravi Chopra who's directing me in Baabul .And I'm going to be working with the Dor director Nagesh Kukunoor. Look at the thread of continuity… Isn't that something?" says John surfacing after a while to express his immense delight at Water being nominated as Canada's official entry to the Oscars.

"When I was in Toronto to promote Kabul Express I spent a lot of time with Deepa Mehta . We really hit it off. I guess the rules for Indian cinema abroad have changed. Today it's really cool to be Indian…And then you come back and see the potholes on the road from the highway…. I can criticize my own country. But I won't allow anyone outside my country to do so. Thanks to films like Water, it's really cool to be an Indian abroad."

John is delighted by how far Water has gone. "I remember at the Toronto film festival last year there was Steven Sodenberg, Tim Burton, Steven Spielberg and Sir Anthony Hopkins at the Festival. That's when I realized Water is special. I've no clue which way the film will go in India. But we can always hope for the best. Water deals with a sensitive issue of widow re-marriage."

He's surprised by the impact of Water worldwide. "Water is solely responsible for giving me an identity as an actor abroad. When I went back to the Toronto film festival this time, the North American press and movie-goers who waited outside the hotel knew me by name. They had my photograph to sign. And Water is solely responsible."

While last year John was in Toronto with Water this year he took Kabul Express. "Kabul Express didn't feature in the gala section. But it reinforced the fact that I was there two years in the running. It's considered prestigious to be at Toronto film festival twice in two years. Cameron Bailey who got Kabul Express there said onstage, "I promise you a John Abraham film every year.'

John is open to an international career. "But I haven't really said yes to anything. Right now I'd rather focus on my projects here. Yes, there's a probability that I could do an international project next year. But not right now."
