I don't consciously project cool image: John Abraham

Bollywood's latest pinup boy John Abraham, who has brought out a calendar of his own images for 2007, denies that he is making a conscious effort to market a "cool image".

"Let me state once and for all, I've done nothing to consciously project a cool image. Whether it's the motorbikes or brand endorsements, I do what comes naturally to me," John told IANS.

"I feel there's an overt attempt to portray oneself as cool in our industry. But to try to be cool is very un-cool. If there's a cool-quotient to your personality, it will show up without your trying," he added.

John said the calendar was a no-profit venture.

"Whether it's my own brand of clothes or me serving as a brand ambassador for a mo-bike, I guess I've been forging my own style of self-projection. The calendar is an idea that, to my knowledge, hasn't been done by any other actor. It'll contain only my images. Does that seem slightly narcissistic?

"It is actually nothing more than a humble exercise in public relations. The calendar with my pictures shot by Subi Samuel will be sent to people whom I know and would like to reach out to at the beginning of the year. It's a no-profit venture," stressed John.

Does John belong to the cool-school?

Send Salaam-e-Ishq - Ecards"When I was doing an endorsement for my clothesline, someone said, 'cool is John Abraham'. It's interesting. But they would look at the clothes and say, 'this is very John Abraham'. I felt flattered. When you get branded with a certain image that defines your cool-quotient, I think it's very cool."

To John cool is..."the movies that you do, the clothes you wear or not wear and the company you keep".

John is good at both the dressed and undressed variety of cool. "Good, na? Because sometimes you may not get the proper designer! Might as well be prepared to make do without the right clothes," he quipped.

When John Abraham refused to work with Kangana Ranaut

The dashing John Abraham had refused to work with newcomer Kangana Ranaut in two films.

John who himself was a model had a tough time to break into the film industry and later on when he had carved a niche for himself, was supposedly apprehensive to work with Kangana.

But John has also worked alongside other new actresses, like Udita Goswami in Paap . Or perhaps John was well aware of Kangana’s capabilities and was afraid of being overshadowed by the actress.

John refused to work opposite Kangana in Imtiaz Ali’s Rock Star and Anurag Kashyap’s No Smoking .

In Bollywood often the hero and his preferences are always taken into consideration first hence even though Kashyap was keen to work with Kangana, John’s decision forced him to opt for the buxom Ayesha Takia instead.

However the forthright and sprightly Kangana Ranaut says, “I’ve no idea whether John wants to work with me or not. I’m too busy working with those who want to work with me than to worry about those who don’t. It’s true that Anurag who’s a dear friend was keen to have me in his film. I’ve no idea what happened but I’m sure we’ll work together in the future.”

However Kangana too has had her share of disagreements with her co-star Shiney Ahuja who was seen opposite her in Gangster and Who Lamhe . Though Shiney and Kangana share amazing on-screen chemistry, off-screen the two actors barely acknowledge each other.

No Smoking behind the camera!

‘No Smoking’, the movie with an anti-smoking message, is reforming the smokers on the film’s sets also.

While a non-smoker like John Abraham has to smoke before the camera, it is quite the opposite for some regular smokers behind the camera on the sets of producer Kumar Mangat’s movie No Smoking .

Mangat has reportedly gotten strict with the film’s crew to keep them from smoking on the sets because the whole purpose of the film is to give an anti-smoking message. The producer has begun fining anyone who is caught smoking on the sets. And the fine is also hefty : Rs 500.

This strict code does not spare even the movie’s director Anurag Kashyap who is a regular smoker. Whenever Anurag is caught smoking a cigarette he has to shell out Rs. 500.

Moreover, lest anyone smoke on the sly, Mangat has reportedly hired a cameraman to photograph those who try to smoke stealthily.

Actor Ranvir Shorey , too, has been fined by the producer.

And if any unitmember refuses to pay the fine, Kumar tells him the amount will be deducted from their remuneration.

The producer is said to have raised more than one lakh rupees from the fines so far.

John, who gets to smoke a lot in the movie, has not been fined even once because he does not smoke in real life.

The film tells the story of a chain smoker who joins a rehabilitation centre after his marriage comes to the point of falling apart because of his compulsive habit. The movie has Ayesha Takia pairing with John.

Why Hrithik wants to gift John a thesaurus?

We think you’re Bollywood’s Man of the Moment…
It’s been a great year not just for me personally but also for our industry. All in all, there have been lots of happy endings. I’m just a

small part of this great victory of the entire industry.

But your films, Krrish and Dhoom 2, have spread maximum smiles among distributors?
It’s always the film that works. Sure, actors are the last link with the audience and they ultimately translate the director’s vision but

they can’t do anything alone. That said, I’m happy that my distributors are happy.

How do you look back at 2006?
I don’t look back because the only purpose it serves is that it inflates the ego. I always believe that I did almost enough for my films

but from the feedback, it seems that I did more than enough.

Are you your biggest critic?
Unfortunately, yes. I’m still looking for the negatives to come from the outside source that I can depend on. That will be so

convenient. I get more intrigued by the people who have found fault in my work. I keep them close to me.

Koi…Mil Gaya, Lakshya, Krrish, Dhoom 2 and now Jodha Akbar, all of them are about larger-than-life super guys; don’t you

want to play a common man now?

I’ve always been a dreamer. I feel that if something in your mind is possible to do, then that dream is not big enough. I’m intrigued

to know what my true potential is. The only way I can find that out is by pushing myself. Cinema should make you feel like a child.

I have this urge to break out and give something not seen before to my audience... stuff like time travel, futuristic fare and invisible

man.

What was more challenging, Krrish or Dhoom 2?
Definitely Krrish. And that’s because of the risk in the concept. Before we began Krrish, whenever we would tell anyone that the

film is about a superhero who wears a mask and a cape, people used to laugh.

What does success mean to you?
It means to be in complete control of your senses and to live without fear of being what you are, no matter what it is. It means

being evolved enough to work the hardest I can, purely for the love of it.

How do you explain the furore created by the kiss in Dhoom 2?
Did you like the kiss?

Yes, I think you were good but that doesn’t answer my question?
If you enjoyed it then I rest my case. Perfect.

What about the obscenity case filed by a Bihar lawyer against you and Aishwarya Rai?
Even talking about that lawyer would be giving him undue importance but I guess I have to say this once and for all. The man does

not even represent five or six people, it’s just his way of getting the TV crews in his office.

Are you the most expensive star after your Rs 35-crore three-film deal with Adlabs?
Remuneration is relative to the worth you pay for. And if you are offered a price without demanding it, things are quite obvious,

aren’t they?

John Abraham says you’re the most gorgeous man. Comment.
I guess I’d say thank you and gift him a thesaurus as a birthday gift.

Hrithik Roshan in 2007?
Well, he’s on to another big challenge in with Jodha Akbar. We are also working on Krrish 3 and should start shooting by the end of

next year.

How are you enjoying the role of dad to Hrehaan?
Oh, my best role ever. We call him Ray in the house. That’s become his nickname.
